Some of you may remember our flooding disaster back in Feb 2017 when we were distracted while filling the sink in the caravan. We like to think of the occasion as “enforced cleaning”.
Some time ago we had another disaster. It wasn’t pleasant.
It’s not unusual for months to go by when we’re not able to visit The Sled. It happens. On this occasion we were looking forward to taking it easy and kicking back. We had a well stocked freezer full of goodies, some DVDs to watch and plenty of free time.
As soon as we opened up The Sled, we knew something was wrong. The vomit-inducing smell of decay was inescapable. Something had died inside the caravan and had slowly rotted away while we were absent. This is the stuff of nightmares.
We switched on the lights to get a better idea of what had happened. There’s not a lot of natural light in the van when all the curtains and blinds are closed so the lights are necessary. Except the lights didn’t work. Odd. Suddenly it makes sense, the power has been off and the contents of the fridge and freezer have rotted away in the absence of refrigeration. No dead body, but lots of dead dim sims.
Checking the shared meter box reveals our van has been switched off at the source and it’s not an electrical fault. Good thing, I guess. Except who would do that? No idea and we can only assume it was switched off in error.
The clean up was unpleasant. Decayed dim sims and frozen veggies smell putrid. The fridge and freezer were emptied and wiped. And wiped again. Baking soda was sprinkled all over and we opened as many windows and vents as possible.
Since then, we empty the fridge and switch off the power as we leave. Once was enough.
